Dry mix this formula;
then add stain:

Dark greens and blues
need less stain; rutile works at
30; try other oxides starting at a small
% for cobalt, chrome; copper usually
goes a spotty metallic black.
Other than stains, I use
rutile, powered illmanite, calcined iron oxide...
The texture of this
engobe is much rougher than the commercial underglazes; this is because they ball mill and add
cmc...most potters do not have ball mills....If you think you want to glaze
over the engobe, bisque the engobe on first...the high % of stain is to make a
very bright color without glaze.
